Meeting Minutes May 6, 2008

1.)  MAC

Seven members traveled to the Midwest Archives Conference last month.  Not only did we have great opportunities to network, we were able to raise $730 in funds for next year through T-shirt and Archivist’s Cookbook sales!

2.)  Bake SaleThis Wednesday, May 7!!

Please donate baked items to this last bake sale of the year.  The sale will be held from 8:00 – 4:00 in the SLIS commons.  Set up is from 7:30-8:00, so please drop off your items then, and/or help set up the sale.  Email Simone Munson at sorowley(at)wisc.edu if you can help watch the table – most needed right now are times after 1:30.

3.)  Grover Crisp

The lunch with Grover Crisp (VP of Asset Management and Film Restoration at Sony Pictures) is finally here!  Meet Mr. Crisp at noon at the Sunroom Café on Thursday.

At the Cinematheque this Friday at 7:30,Grover Crisp will be introducing a restored print of Frank Capra’s American Madness.

4.)  Digital Preservation Workshop at the MAC Fall Symposium in Lawrence, KS.

The symposium will be on Nov. 7-8, 2008.  Check out the Fall Symposium web page at http://www.midwestarchives.org/

2008Fall/index.asp.  Please e-mail Tyler Kennedy at tckennedy(at)wisc.edu if you are interested in attending this event.

5.)  Student Chapter Website

Lisa Muccigrosso is currently working hard on the website.  It will replace the current wiki as the Chapter’s main page, and the wiki will be used to post current events.

6.)  Some Ideas for Activities Next Year…

·        Emerging archivists roundtable – Greg suggested that archivists who recently graduated could be invited for a roundtable discussion early next year.  Other student chapters from nearby universities (UW-Milwaukee, UI-Champaign-Urbana) could also be invited to take part in the event.

·        Travel to a local or regional archive, such as the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.

·        Bake Sales will continue next year, and it was suggested that we partner with another student group again for next year’s Chili Cook-off.  This year we partnered with the Jail Library Group for that event.

·        It was suggested that more social activities be offered through the Chapter next year.

7.)  Farewell to the Second-years!

Some sort of good-bye party/get-together plan is in the works.  Stay tuned!

Meeting Minutes April 15, 2008

1) Welcome to newly elected coordinator Greg Kocken and co-coordinators Meredith Lowe and Julia Wong.

For his opening statement, Greg says maybe for next year we could go to Milwaukee next year to the Harley-Davison museum...

2) Greg explains MAC: we're leaving 6:00am Thursday in front of HC White. We're hoping to make the last session on Thursday afternoon. We're also selling T-shirts and maybe some cook books to raise funds for the SAA-SC. Everyone's attending various sessions based on their interests.

3) Archives Leadership Conference in Madison this summer - Jane Pearlmutter has an idea that after the mentoring/teambuilding session on June 27th, there can be a mentoring piece involving us. If people are around this summer, please keep this date in mind. Jane will send out an email closer to the date, so stay tuned.

4) We're looking at doing a bake sale in these final few weeks of the semester, on Wednesday the 7th. Simone is organizing it, so please plan to bake or help man the table of deliciousness.

5) There should be one last meeting before the end of the year - the first years can maybe throw a goodbye party for the second years. More will be forthcoming soon.

6) The website! Greg and Lisa are looking at Googlepages, but they are concerned about keeping the website up-to-date. One solution could be a wiki linked to the webpage, which anyone can update. One idea proposed that an elected official or volunteer could be solely in charge of keeping the website up-to-date.

8) Grover Crisp - Heather will send out an email. His finalized schedule is still uncertain, but he's still around on May 8th and 9th. The lunch should be on May 8th.

Meeting Minutes, March 11, 2008

T-shirt designs

Kris put out a call for design ideas for this year’s SAA-SC t-shirt. Ciaran announced that Jane Pearlmutter wants to order 30 of last years t-shirt. The idea of ordering extra and having some to sell at MAC was brought up and will be looked into.

Nominating officers for 2008-2009

There are 3 positions to be filled. Nominations need to be sent to Kris by March 31st. Voting will take place by April 7th. The next chapter meeting will by April 15th to welcome the new coordinator and the two new co-coordinators (Cocos).

MAC

Meredith and Greg are organizing a trip to MAC in Louisville, KY. Nine people expressed interest in going. Cars need to be offered up for transporting folks to the conference. Conference registration and hotel information was discussed. Greg volunteered to make reservations.

Bake Sale

Another bake sale may take place towards the end of the semester. A Tuesday would work better than a Thursday but a date wasn’t decided on.

Grover Crisp at the Cinematheque

Grover Crisp is coming May 9th. If you want to have lunch with him email Heather Heckman at heckman@wisc.edu

New SAA-SC Website Needed

The SAA-SC website needs a major overhaul and the PB wiki isn’t really catching on. Greg is going to explore the new Google wiki and see if that is an option. Anyone interested in looking into it should collaborate with him. Designing and implementing a new student chapter website would be an excellent addition to a resume!

Meeting Minutes, February 20, 2008

Interview workshop is tonight; everyone is welcom to attend. If you dres up, the group can give you feedback about your interview outfit.

On Chicago 28, the gorup is going to Chicago. They hope to leave Madison by 7:30; look for an email from Meredith or Julia for the final details. Plan on brining $10 to cover gas; lunch is on your own.

National History Day is coming up and they need volunteers. Please contact Sarah Clement (Sarah dot Clement at wisconsinhistory dot org) for complete information or check www.wisconsinhistory.org.

LaFollette High School is still interested in having a SLIS student undertake an independent study in their archive. Contact Ciaran for full details.

Interested in gaining experience at another archve? What about a working spring break? Last year, Amy O'Shea spent her spring break processing a collection at an archive in New Jersey. Contact her if you'd like to hear more about her experience.

Interested in a diplomatics workshop? Please let us know or contact Ciaran.

Interested in attending MAC in Louisville (April 17-19) this year? Contact Greg for more information; he's trying to get enough people together so he can ask for a grant from ASM. He plans on driving there; SAA-SC might be able to cover registration fees.

Our next meeting will be before spring break. Please come to this meting with ideas for t-shirt designs!

Meeting Minutes, September 10, 2007

The student chapter is your organization. You get out of it what you put into it. Last year, I put a lot of cookies and cupcakes into it, and I was able to attend the SAA Annual Conference in Chicago for around $100 because the student chapter paid for my registration and hotel room. So, while I didn’t get cookies and cupcakes back, I did get something even better!

We have the opportunity to create a display in the hallway outside of the SLIS library. October is Archives Month, so what better time to spread the word! If you signed up to help with this project, you’ll be contacted by Amanda Schnirring, you generously agreed to chair the committee (you can see her exhibit handiwork when you visit the WHS).

We also need (ok, desperately need) an updated website. No only does it need updated content, it needs a total overhaul. So, whether you’re an experienced webmaster or an interested novice, please help us out – it’ll be a great (and tangible!) addition to your resume. If you didn’t sign up to help with the website and you’d like to, please contact Kris Bronstad (bronstad@wisc.edu).

The student chapter also fundraisers throughout the year. Last year we held several bake and craft sales, sold cookbooks, and created and sold t-shirts. All of the money we earned helped pay our registration costs for the SAA Annual conference. I’m in charge of the fundraising committee, so if you have ideas, suggestions, or want to help out in any way, let me know. I’ll be contacting you if you’ve already signed up for this very fun project.
